when should you start hrt for perimenopause? you don’t have to wait for menopause.

Lets start by saying one quick thing. Perimenopause + menopause are not the same thing.

Perimenopause → 10-15 year neuroendocrine transition leading up to menopause

Menopause → the ONE SINGULAR DAY of the 12 month mark of no periods.

Post Menopause → Everything after that one day.

Okay, now that we have that set aside. When should you be considering hormone replacement therapy? When is the right time to start? Obviously, I’m a PA not yours (YET??) So this is general information to the best of my ability because there is a lot of “it depends” here.

The first symptoms women report in perimenopause are not cycle changes or skipping periods. It’s things like sleep disturbances, less tolerance for bullshit, mood swings, irritability and of course being pissed at your husband for breathing too loudly or chewing.

If this sounds familiar and. you’re 35+ it’s worth having a conversation with someone who actually understands hormones and perimenopause (probably not your shitty insurance based provider SORRY) Because otherwise you’re gonna get told “labs are normal you’re anxious bye”

This is where having a really good practitioner comes in handy. Because there are over 100 symptoms of perimenopause, not everything is always perimenopause and we don’t want to slap HRT on an issue thats a vitamin d deficiency, thyroid issue or something else entirely!

Here is my general opinion from my personal and professional experience: If you feel like shit and hormones are low and you’re 35+ you’re likely a candidate for hormone therapy. Also assuming your hormones were tested appropriately at the right time.

Now, if you’re under eating, drinking a bunch of booze and doing not great at foundational health— you might fix those things and not need HRT. You might fix those things and STILL be someone who benefits from hormones— ya get me?

And this does NOT mean that a woman needs to EARN HRT by “doing all the things”. And also, we don’t need to be giving out medications that lifestyle can do the work for.

I cannot say this enough: If you have a doctor saying “you’re too young for hrt” but you’re 35+ and having symptoms it’s time to find a new doctor (or if you’re in Utah, come see me!)

If your brain is like FUCK YES I’ve been looking for you.
